Why Is It Impossible To Convince Anybody Of Anything?

Spreading a new worldview often feels like running into brick walls.

While the tide is slowly turning, scientific materialism still grips 21st-century thinking with remarkable tenacity. Yet the cracks in its foundation are impossible to ignore: materialism cannot explain consciousness, its view of death as absolute nothingness clashes with physics (how can consciousness ‘end’ in a timeless universe?), and it stubbornly denies the observer-dependent nature of quantum reality – despite quantum mechanics demanding it.

All the evidence is there. So why is it so difficult to change minds?

I asked AI and it came up with three main reasons for this:
● Identity protection
● Cognitive dissonance
● Ego defense

  1. Identity protection: beliefs as self-defense
When you challenge a deeply held belief, the brain registers it as a physical threat – not just to ideas, but to social standing and personal safety.

For an atheist, the idea that consciousness isn’t produced by the brain – and might persist after death – isn’t just wrong; it’s existentially terrifying. The emotional pain of cognitive dissonance makes people double down, not listen.

  1. Cognitive dissonance: the uncomfortable truth
Dissonance arises when actions and beliefs conflict, or when two contradictory ideas collide.

Quantum mechanics reveals a universe that is fundamentally not solid, yet materialists either deny its observer-dependent features or invent convoluted workarounds to avoid facing the implications. The discomfort of holding both ‘quantum mechanics is true’ and ‘materialism is true’ is too much to bear.

  1. Ego defense: the need to be right
Admitting error can feel like a humiliating defeat. This is why materialism’s defenders often seem militant, dismissing overwhelming evidence with statements like:

‘I would contend that it’s safe to say that the physicalist standpoint has all the evidence from modern neuroscience in it’s favor… While none of the other ideas have any evidence whatsoever.’

The AI added two more critical factors:

Logical mismatch: If someone didn’t use logic to adopt a belief, logic won’t dislodge it.

The goal of winning: Most debates aren’t about truth – they’re about not losing.

This is why paradigm shifts take generations. Old ideas don’t surrender to persuasion; they die out with the people who hold them. The mind, once captured by materialism, resists escape with every defense mechanism it has.
