Of Course Animals Are Conscious

One of the most important reasons I started Free-Consciousness, is because this worldview can change the way we look at our fellow animals and how we treat them.

Today, the BBC featured an article titled: ‘Are animals conscious? How new research is changing minds’. The article explores the evolving perspective on animal consciousness, which Charles Darwin suggested but many scientists previously dismissed. Recent research, particularly on bees, shows complex behaviors indicative of consciousness, challenging long-held beliefs.

Experiments demonstrate bees’ ability to count, recognize human faces, and use tools for fun. These findings, along with studies on other animals, suggest a broader recognition of animal consciousness. The article highlights a growing shift in scientific thinking, advocating for more research on various species to better understand animal sentience and inform welfare practices.

It is quite amazing – and sad – that in 2024, we are still only at this level when it comes to recognizing animal consciousness.

One of the criticisms proponents of biocentrism like me often get is that it is arrogant to place humans once again at the center of the universe. In contrast, it is apparently not anthropocentric to consider humans as special in the consciousness department. This critique on biocentrists is unjustified for various reasons, the main reason being that it doesn’t place human beings at the center, but the consciousness of all living creatures, including even plants and insects.

The current limiting scientific view on consciousness is disastrous for animal wellbeing. It is my hope that when more people start to recognize that every life form is sentient to a certain degree, and that we are all ONE, that animal welfare will dramatically improve. The animals on this planet are in dire need for humans to finally evolve their minds at this point.
